About the project

The BMGHS Government High School in Challakere required a pragmatic, cost-effective upgrade to classrooms, sanitation, accessibility and outdoor learning spaces. Vemula Groups collaborated with local authorities to deliver improved infrastructure, safer circulation and a modest landscape intervention that supports outdoor lessons and play.

Intervention highlights

  • Fresh classroom renovations with improved daylighting and ventilation.
  • New toilets with segregated facilities, handwashing stations and water-efficient fixtures.
  • Accessibility ramp and safer circulation routes between blocks.
  • Outdoor learning courtyard with shaded seating, native planting and play spaces.

Community impact

Works were phased to keep school operations running; training for janitorial staff and a handover manual were provided. The upgrades improved attendance and provided a safer environment for students, especially girls.

Design & technical notes

Design decisions focused on durability, low maintenance and water efficiency. Materials and construction details were chosen to keep lifecycle costs low and ensure local repairability.

  • Vitreous sanitaryware with cisterns designed for low water use.
  • Simple masonry ramps with non-slip finishes for accessibility.
  • Native drought-tolerant planting and mulched beds to reduce irrigation needs.
